In this article we want to specifically address the many types of obstacles that you will encounter during an OCR and some basic tips on how to prepare and train for them. We have written on the different kinds of categories and factors of various OCRs as a way to help you decide which race is best for you. Some of the most common obstacles in OCRs involve cargo nets, monkey bars, mud pits, rope swings and wall climbs. The types of obstacles that you can find in the standard obstacle course race are basic obstacles, dirty obstacles, technical obstacles, psychological obstacles, full body obstacles and group obstacles. While there are indeed obstacles that are rather basic, such as climbing over walls, crawling through tubes, and swinging on ropes, there are also a myriad of other categories to consider and be aware of when preparing for an OCR. If you have never run in an OCR then you may have a very reductionist view of what you will encounter in the obstacles throughout the race. ![]() Not all OCRs are made equal and the same sentiment is true of the specific obstacles in any given OCR.
